Greener signalling equipment

Refurbishment delivers a greener railway and less pressure on the environment

Many level crossing installations in Denmark consist of components that are robust but ageing—and increasingly discontinued. Discarding all equipment every time an installation is modernised or dismantled is both costly and environmentally burdensome. That is why we have long worked with reuse as a sound and green alternative.

Systematic refurbishment of components

Since the 1980s, RWE has worked purposefully to refurbish and reuse equipment for level crossings. This includes, among other things, up to 1,000 barrier drives that have been overhauled over the years so they can be used again instead of being discarded.

In 2025 alone, we refurbished approx. 50 barrier drives for Banedanmark. Some of the refurbished drives were subsequently used at BUES 2000 level crossings on the West Line.
In addition to barrier drives, we also refurbish relays, bells, masts, barrier lights and other components for both level crossings and signalling installations.

CO₂ savings and lower costs

Reusing equipment reduces both the CO₂ footprint and the total cost for society and infrastructure managers. Each refurbished component saves resources, minimises waste and makes use of existing equipment—without compromising operational reliability.
