Extending the service life of older interlocking systems
From critical faults to stable operation at Sweden’s largest marshalling yards
Marshalling yards depend on stable IT and interlocking systems—even when the underlying technology is obsolete. Trafikverket uses the AlisterCargo interlocking system at the four largest marshalling yards in Hallsberg, Borlänge, Sävenäs and Malmö. Several of the systems are now more than 20 years old and are partly based on hardware and software that can no longer be sourced. This places significant demands on maintenance and troubleshooting.
Critical hardware fault
In 2025, a critical fault occurred in Borlänge, where both a Windows 2000 server and a Windows XP operator PC were out of service. New hardware could not be delivered, and the system depended on the original equipment being restored to operation.
Back to stable operation
RWE provided a specialist team with experience in both modern software and legacy system architectures. With a soldering iron, oscilloscope and hands-on knowledge of the technology, both machines were troubleshot, repaired and function-tested. The marshalling yard returned to stable operation—and the team is ready the next time an ageing component needs to be saved.
