Project case
Rebuilding the interlocking system for a new track layout
In Kiruna, the interlocking system has been relocated to the new freight yard
LKAB is Sweden’s largest mining company, and in Kiruna the expansion of the mine has made it necessary to relocate parts of the city – and thus also Sjöbanegården, where large quantities of ore are loaded onto the railway. The yard is equipped with an AlisterCargo interlocking system, which had to be adapted to an entirely new track layout in order to maintain daily operations.
Upgrade to a new track layout and new PLC platform
RWE carried out the rebuilding of the system, including adapting the AlisterCargo system to the new layout and upgrading to the latest Siemens PLC hardware platform. The work included design, implementation, installation, and testing of the upgraded interlocking system.
Ready for the future of ore traffic
The installation proceeded as planned, and after only 20 hours of a planned 96-hour total possession, the system could be handed over to LKAB for testing and commissioning. Sjöbanegården is now fully adapted to the new conditions and ready to handle iron ore transport for many years to come.
